  of Sandalus niger Knoch was taken from a pupa of Cicada that had constructed its emergence burrow and reached the
  soil surface (Craighead 1921).  it was
  thought to have developed as a parasitoid, and its body showed modifications,
  such as a reduction in the legs.  The
  larva was robust and the 9th tergum had a sclerotized tip and bore a pair of
